@[]##HOW THE BALL-POINT WAS BORN
Laszlo's brother, George, a chemist, formulated the ink for the first Biro pen#His invention gave Biro the satisfaction of playing a part in the war against Hitler. In 1944 Biro pens were issued to Allied aircrews involved in high-level bombing raids over Germany because, unlike fountain pens, the Biro did not burst or leak at high altitude#In 1945, when Biro pens went on sale in the USA at a New York department store, 10,000 were snapped up in the first day#When Biro adopted Argentine nationality, he changed his middle name from Jozsef to Jose as a mark of gratitude to his adopted country#The BiC pens sold around the world every week contain enough ink to draw a line from Earth to the sun and back#The hole in the top of a BiC pen's cap is there in case it is accidentally swallowed. The hole would allow air to pass into the lungs should the cap become lodged in the throat
